Martin Kronlund is dead. He passed away on Saturday the 1st of March. His ashes are spread in the beautiful forests of Peguerinos which he loved so much.

He was a Swedish teacher who came to Madrid University to teach fencing at the Higher National Institute of Physical Education (I.N.E.F) in 1964. But since he also was an expert in Orienteering he soon started giving classes in Orienteering. In 1970, thanks to Martin, the first map in Spain was made in Madrid, "La Casa de Campo" on a scale of 1:20 000. Martin was still going strong, giving courses in orienteering at the age of 91 years!

In 1984 an international competition was created, which in honour of Martin, was christened by his name; “The Martin Kronlund Trophy" also known as “The Race of the Sword”. This competition takes place every year in the Madrid area in the second or third weekend of March.

Martin Kronlund will always be remembered with much love by everyone within the Spanish orienteering family, and by everyone who had the opportunity to meet him.
